What is Employee Generated Content?
Employee Generated Content (EGC) is content that is created by employees of a company and shared on social media, blogs, company websites and podcasts. Examples of EGC can include photos of the office, showing the employees ‘behind the scenes’ at their jobs, a day in the life of an employee, and more. Once confined to LinkedIn to show off company culture, it has turned into one of the most popular content-styles that we see on TikTok, YouTube and Instagram today.
What are the benefits of adding EGC to your brand's social strategy?
Your employees can be your brand ambassadors. It’s a very cost-effective way of adding brand ambassadors to your social strategy, allowing your brand to maximise engagement, for a lower budget.
EGC is great for driving authenticity and engagement. With 81% of consumers considering trust essential when making purchasing decisions, employee generated content gives an honest, unfiltered view of the people behind their favourite brands.
It’s great at attracting clients and new talent to your company. It will allow them to see what your company values are, the vibes in the office, and the personality of the staff.
Which brands do EGC well?
Sheer Luxe has tapped into EGC for a while and it’s been a real success for them. Its employees have used the success to build their own personal brands, Sapna Rao has seen massive success and has over 80k followers on TikTok.
Also, Hobbycraft Wimbledon has done a great job of getting all its employees dancing on the shop floor, going viral and since then has featured the likes of HRVY and Ella Henderson in the videos, whilst keeping the content authentic.
How do you motivate employees to contribute content, especially those who may not feel comfortable sharing?
Brands should never force their employees to take part – but they don’t have to do it alone either. The content will be much more authentic if those taking part really want to. The social team could get the ball rolling and then see who is feeling the most confident and play around with formats and story-telling techniques. Those who aren’t feeling the most confident in front of the camera can always pitch ideas or get behind the camera!
What role do you see EGC playing in 2025?
This year we’ll see more brands creating EGC content as we know it’s a great way of getting on the beat, reactive content that connects well with audiences. It’s super easy to grab your friend, grab a colleague and get recording. The beauty of EGC is that it doesn’t need a high production value to be successful – more than anything else it just needs to feel authentic.
